Music Majors or Minors

Performing in Redcoats on your principal instrument

Students who audition and are offered Fall 2026 admission to the Hugh Hodgson School of Music for study on a marching band wind instrument* are automatically offered membership in the Fall 2026 Redcoat Band. These students are asked to record both the music and visual audition components for placement purposes and submit them between March 1 and April 1 with their Redcoat Band application. Instructions for both components can be found in the 2026-2027 Brass and Woodwind Audition Information document.

Performing in Redcoats on a secondary wind instrument

Music majors or minors seeking membership in a wind section other than that of their primary instrument are asked to record both the music and visual audition components on their intended marching band instrument. Instructions for both components can be found in the 2026-2027 Brass and Woodwind Audition Information document. After completing both recordings, submit them via the Redcoat Band application between March 1 and April 1.

Non-Music Majors or Minors

It is NOT necessary to be a Music major to be a Redcoat! About 80% of Redcoats major in a field other than Music.

To audition and apply:
1. Carefully review the 2026-2027 Brass and Woodwind Audition Information document, which includes audition timelines, preparation tips, materials, and procedures.
2. Prepare and record the music and visual audition components.
3. Apply for Redcoat Band membership. You will submit links to your audition video(s) within the application. Have this link ready when you apply along with an email address for a reference from your band director or other music teacher and your UGA ID (nine-digit number, starting with "81" you received when you applied to UGA).
4. Ask your director or other music teacher to complete the recommendation form we email them.

UGA Waitlist

Applicants for undergraduate admission to UGA who are offered and accept a spot on the admissions waitlist for Fall 2026 should follow the above procedures for Redcoat Band membership. Though some waitlisted applicants may learn their UGA acceptance status after the Redcoat Band audition deadline, it is important that we receive your band application and audition by April 1 for full membership consideration.

Transfer Students

Undergraduate students at other institutions who apply for transfer admission to UGA should follow the above procedures for Redcoat Band membership. Though transfer applicants may learn their UGA acceptance status after the Redcoat Band audition deadline, it is important that we receive your band application and audition by April 1 for full membership consideration.

Returning members

Membership in the Redcoat Band is granted one season at a time through the annual application and audition process. Brass and woodwind members of the 2025–2026 Redcoat Band should follow these steps to return:

1. Review the complete Membership Information Document for Brass and Woodwinds.
2. Prepare and record both the music and visual audition components.
3. Submit the Redcoat Band application (including links to your audition videos).

Recommendation policy:

• Returning members who are auditioning for the season immediately following their last completed season do not need a music teacher recommendation.
• Former members who did not participate in the 2025–2026 season must submit a music teacher recommendation.
